FAQ

Q?

How can my child get involved in one of the programs offered by YSSA?

A.

Contact YSSA by email, Facebook, or phone - 309-945-2108 - to find out when & where the next meeting will take place. Several members of the coaching staff are always available at the meetings to introduce you to our programs, and answer any questions you may have. It is at that time that we can also determine which program best suits a specific child, based on individual age and skill requirements.

Q?

Is it required that my child have previous shooting experience in order to get involved in YSSA programs?

A.

Absolutely not! Youth members of YSSA do not need any former knowledge or experience with firearms or archery equipment. In order to get started, all a child needs is the desire to learn and the attitude necessary to follow the rules.

Q?

Does my child need to have his/her own firearm or archery equipment in order to participate?

A.

YSSA owns a variety of firearms and archery equipment for use by our youth members, so there is no reason to supply your own. Of course, you’re more than welcome to use your own equipment as well, but ours are available for as long as you need.

Q?

What are the age requirements required to participate in YSSA programs?

A.

YSSA was developed to serve the largest segment of youth possible. We have a variety of programs designed to meet the needs of youth with ages ranging between 8 and 23 years of age (must still be a full-time student).

Q?

Since Shooting Sports use guns and bows/arrows, is it considered safe?

A.

Actually, Shooting Sports is one of the safest sports you can become involved with and safety is taken seriously with all of our disciplines. Safety is always taught before members are allowed to handle a firearm or bow. It is one the safest sports you can get involved with. All major sports in schools have a much higher injury rate than Shooting Sports. Cheerleading leads with the highest injury rates.

Q?

What types of Shooting Sports does your group offer?

A.

We are always expanding our disciplines. Currently, we have state certified instructors and coaches for:
Shotgun: Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clay’s, and 5-Stand
Archery: Compound, Recurve
Pistol: Rim-fire and Center-fire
Rifle: Small Bore and Air

Q?

My child doesn’t own a gun. Do we have to buy one to join?

A.

No, YSSA has equipment and firearms for most our disciplines. We would be happy to let any member of our program use our equipment.

Q?

What time of the year does your group meet?

A.

We meet all year long. We have locations for all Shooting Sports disciplines to be practiced indoors when the weather does not permit for outdoors.

Q?

My child has never shot or held a gun; can he/she still get involved with your group?

A.

Yes we have an excellent program for beginners where we teach safety and the very basics of all our shooting sports.

Q?

My child has a physical handicap and cannot participate in other sports; can he/she participate in YSSA?

A.

We recommend you check with your doctor but most physical limitations can be worked with in most disciplines. Safety always remains our biggest priority. When we attend State and National events, the athletes with physical challenges compete right along with the other athletes. Once the sport is mastered, it can be a lifelong enjoyment for any athlete.
